Product Description

Compendium of Tomato Diseases and Pests, Second Edition, is intended as a general reference and diagnostic guide for a diverse group of readers.  This guide will be useful not only to plant pathologists and other agricultural scientists and professionals, but also to backyard gardeners who want to grow healthy tomato plants that bear ample fruit.

The Introduction provides background information about tomato botany and culture, seed production and quality assurance, and container production of transplants.  Part I outlines the infectious diseases that affect tomato -- including those caused by fungi and oomycetes, bacteria, phytoplasmas, viruses, and viroids -- along with postharvest diseases and disorders and diseases caused by nematodes.  Part II covers arthropod pests: mites, insects, and "worm" pests.  Part III examines noninfectious diseases, disorders, and damage: namely, physiological disorders, nutritional disorders, herbicide damage, and genetic diseases.  Part IV, which discusses diseases of unconfirmed etiology, has been reorganized to adopt the format used elsewhere in the book.

Diseases and disorders are discussed in a consistent structure: a statement of importance and distribution of the disease or disorder, identification of its common signs and symptoms, description of its causal organism or agent, explanation of its cycle and epidemiology, and suggestions for management, followed by a list of selected references.  Nearly 250 high-quality color photographs capture typical signs and symptoms of important tomato diseases and pests occurring throughout the world -- in the greenhouse, in the field, and in transit to market.
