Product Description

Dates: Imported and American Varieties of Dates in the United States is Roy W. Nixon's unpublished manuscript (1955) on American varieties of dates and borrows liberally from his 1950 work on imported varieties of dates. Donald R. Hodel and Dennis V. Johnson have edited and updated the information from both these accounts and added critical background information, drawing upon such disciplines as history, botany, economics and horticulture. Their intention is to provide for the first time a comprehensive account of all of the varieties of dates and the date palm industry in the United States.

This book is divided into five parts. Part one is the introduction and part two describes the botany of the date palm and its various organs. These two sections provide background information critical to understanding the past, present, and future of the date industry in the United States and to identifying and describing date varieties. Part three describes the commercial imported varieties of dates and part four describes all American date varieties. Although culture is usually discussed under each variety, general information about date culture and management is included in part five.
