Responding to the expansion of scientific knowledge about the roles of nutrients in human health, the Institute of Medicine has developed a new approach to establish Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) and other nutrient reference values.  The new title for these values, Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), is the inclusive name being given to this new approach. These are quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes applicable to healthy individuals in the United States and Canada.

This book establishes a set of reference values for dietary energy, carbohydrate, fiber, fat, fatty acids, cholesterol, protein, and amino acids.  Close attention was given throughout the book to the evidence relating macronutrient intakes to risk reduction of chronic disease and to amounts needed to maintain health.  The book includes guidelines for partitioning energy sources (Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges) compatible with decreasing risks of various chronic diseases.  It also provides a definition for dietary fiber.

The book's attention to energy would be incomplete without its substantial review of the role of daily physical activity in achieving and sustaining fitness and optimal health (Chapter 12).  The book provides recommended levels of energy expenditure that are considered most compatible with minimizing risks of several chronic diseases and provides guidance for achieving recommended levels if energy expenditure.  Inclusion of these recommendations avoids the tacit false assumption that light sedentary activity is the expected norm in the United States and Canada.
