Product Description

Food production by the year 2020 will have to increase about 50% on top of the present levels to satisfy the needs of around 8 billion people estimated to be on the Earth by that time.  Most of the increase would have to come from intensification of agricultural production.  Judicious nutrient management, including fertilization, has been critical in increasing food production to present levels, and will be essential for maintaining soil fertility and food production in the future.  Judicious nutrient management balances amounts added to the production system with attempts to maximize nutrient utilization and minimize nutrient losses.

Nutrient Use in Crop Production summarizes various aspects of optimal nutrient use in modern crop production.  The first two chapters deal with issues of production of food, feed and fibre, and their distribution in terms of population demands on one side and soil fertility decline on the other.  The third chapter emphasizes the importance of testing soils and plants for the nutrient status to achieve optimal fertilization.  The next four chapters describe various fertilizer and other nutrient sources, their chemistry and agronomic effectiveness in optimising crop production.  Mineral and symbiotic sources of nitrogen are discussed, followed by phosphate and micronutrient fertilizers.  Chapter eight evaluates strategies of applying fertilizers, and chapter nine describes nutrient management strategies, including the role of better adapted cultivars.  The last chapter discusses the role of nutrient-efficient genotypes in modern agricultural production.

Contents:  Population growth, food production & nutrient requirements, Soil fertility decline, Soil & plant testing programs optimizing fertilizer strategies, Efficacy of various nitrogen fertilizers, Nitrogen fixation of crop production, Chemistry & agronomic effectiveness of phosphate fertilizers, Micronutrient fertilizers, Fertilizers through seed coatings, Nutrient management, cultivar development & selection to optimize water use efficiency, Nutrient-efficient crops in modern agriculture.
