Product Description

Pathogens Infecting Insects and Mites of Citrus is a pictorial guide to the entomopathogens of phytophagous insects and mites found in and on all plant parts of citrus trees.  The guide also includes illustrations of healthy citrus insects and mites, and the injuries caused by their feeding.  Although our emphasis is directed at Florida citrus growers, other interested people will find the images helpful in identifying arthropods and the diseases that infect them.

The book contains a chapter on the global spread of citrus and the early history of citrus biological control in Florida.  Other chapters discuss the different abiotic (weather) and biotic (natural enemies) factors that influence the prevalence of disease in citrus ecosystems, and a chapter on the modes of transmission and infection.  However, the bulk of the book is comprised of 14 chapters which cover the phytophagous pests of citrus and the diseases which affect them.

The groups of arthropods infesting Florida citrus are hemipteran insects in the suborder Sternorryncha (armored and soft scales, whiteflies, aphids, mealybugs, psyllids) and the suborder Heteroptera (leaf-footed bugs, stink bugs, sharpshooters); lepidopteran insects (citrus leafminer, orangedog); social insects in the soil (imported red fire ants, termites); coleopteran insects (citrus root weevils); dipteran insects (fruit flies); thysanopteran insects (thrips); orthopteran insects (grasshoppers, katydids); eriophyid mites (rust mites, bud mites) and tetranyschid and tenupalpid mites (spider mites, broad mites, flat mites).  Finally, two chapters are included which present perspectives on microbial control of citrus insects and mites.
