Product Description

Small farms constitute approximately 80 percent of the farms in California, numbering (according to the USDA definition of "small farm") about 60,000 farms.  While a good portion of these farms can more appropriately be regarded as rural residential farms, or as the USDA defines them, residential/life-style farms, a substantial portion of them are purposefully engaged in commercial activity with the intent of producing quality products to satisfy the tastes and preferences of potential consumers.  Across the United States, one finds a similarly high proportion of small farms---about 80 percent of all farms.

Small-scale agriculture contributes greatly to the vitality and diversity of California's rich agriculture and the state's history.  This second edition of The Small Farm Handbook was prepared to provide small farm operators and other readers with a comprehensive, up-to-date resource that will help them better understand the major considerations of small-scale farming.  The current volume follows in the footsteps of the 1994 edition, which, for many years, was the only publication of its kind.

While much of the detailed discussion here will draw on the California experience, parallel developments have occurred in other parts of the United States as California innovations have diffused throughout the country: the California picture is generally descriptive of the recent trajectory of small farms across the United States.  We can identify a number of factors and methods that have enabled the continued survival of California's and America's small farm sector.

Contents:  Introduction: Vitality and viability of small farms, California's small farms - an overview, Background Skills and Knowledge: Requirements for successful farming, The basics, Small farm profiles: The Prevedelli Family, Emily Ayala, The Business Side: Enterprise selection, Farm and financial management, Marketing and product sales, Labor management, Small farm profiles: Mike Lee, Manuel Bautista, The Farming Side: Growing crops, Postharvest handling and safety of perishable crops, Raising animals, Small farm profiles: Dan Macon, Jay Ruskey, Appendix: University of California Cooperative Extension Offices.
