Product Description

The aim of Wine Grape Production Guide for Eastern North America is to provide a comprehensive resource for individuals exploring or currently engaged in commercial wine grape production. This guide discusses two decades of relevant production issues covering a large geographic area: from northern Georgia, through the mid-Atlantic and into New England and southern Canada.

Building on an earlier production guide by Wolf and Poling, 1995, new chapters on means of reducing spray drift, irrigation technology, weed management, insect pest management and grape ripening processes have been added, while core subjects of the prior publication have been substantially revised and expanded.

The outlook for wine and wine grape production in eastern North America is bright, but change is inevitable. Locally-produced wines do not have a monopoly on the local wine market. Competitive growers will scrutinize all costs of grape production while continuing to strive for high quality, sustainable crop yields. Vineyard site selection, which has focused on minimizing climate and biotic threats, will increasingly seek to match specific varieties with specific soils and mesoclimates to increase grape and wine potential. Vineyard cultural management will continue to be refined as we gain more experience and research knowledge of factors that affect grape and wine quality. Understanding the interactions between crop level and environmental stresses will provide bases for adjusting crops to meet seasonal or site-specific constraints.  ---Tony K Wolf, Editor
